Review: Black Canary Ignite
Black Canary: Ignite
Rating: 4/5
Buy or Borrow: Buy
Source: Copy courtesy of the publisher in exchange for an honest review!
Thirteen-year-old Dinah Lance is in a rock band with her two best friends and has a good relationship with her mom, but when a mysterious figure threatens her friends and family, she learns more about herself and her mother's secret past.
As a huge fan of both Meg Cabot and the DC universe, I've been super excited for this team up and for Meg Cabot to give Dinah her own spin! DC are really spoiling us with some wonderful author collaborations this year!
First things first, the character designs were so cute and fun, as was the colour scheme. I really enjoyed all of the bright colours, I felt like it was fitting for Dinah's character as well as her world. The introduction to she and her friends was also a lot of fun, I got such strong girl power vibes from them and I loved the dynamic between them.
Dinah and her friends are going through careers week, figuring out their future and what they want to do as well as in Dinah's case struggling with her parents disapproval over what it is that she wants to do. Her police officer father isn't exactly thrilled that she wants to follow in his footsteps. But I feel like this part of the story will be quite relatable to a lot of readers!
Dinah has a strong sense of what it is that she wants to do and achieve with her life, and a determination to do it all. She's also kind of a badass and doesn't really take any crap from anyone. Her friends are as equally colourful and fun to read about, just as strong in their goals as Dinah. I loved that Kat's a cheerleader but not your stereotypical kind, all three girls were a little bit different and a little bit quirky which is why I loved them so much!
Of course, her future isn't the only thing Dinah's struggling with, she's struggling with the strange incidents around her that seem to point to her being able to destroy things with her voice. She refuses to believe that she could have a superpower and as such struggles with her new power, what it can do and how to control it. Plus we've got a shadowy figure creeping around.
One thing I did enjoy a huge amount in this was Dinah's parents and her relationship with them, it was so nicely depicted. While her father wants to keep her safe, he's still proud of her desire to save people, and they always have her back in any given situation. They encourage her a lot too when it comes to her power. I also enjoyed the relationship she had with her friends, it was very natural and very well done as she tried to keep her secret from them and they worried for her.
Nicely paced, and with a nice amount of humour as well as some excellent relationships, along with a nice journey for Dinah as she figures out how to use her power, comes to terms with it and herself and finds the courage to use it. Black Canary: Ignite is a fun read, with nice, bright art and a lot of quirky characters to bring the story to life!
There are also a tonne of easter eggs when it comes to the DC universe, Green Arrow, Batman, Batgirl, the Joker and a lot of other familiar names dropped throughout the volume as well!

Spooktober Recommends: Ghosts & Ghouls
Okay so I've been trying to save this because it's probably my favourite but I figured it was time, because Halloween is drawing ever closer! Today's rec post is all about ghosts. Now, I don't know about you, but I can handle most scary/horror things....except for ghosts. Ghosts freak me out to another level, like I had to go watch Paranormal Activity and I didn't sleep properly for a week. I used to watch Most Haunted ALL the time, and it always creeped me out. I think it's the whole not knowing thing that creeps me out, whatever!
Anyway, this category is my favourite because they're the only thing that can truly creep me out and there are a lot of great books in this post and a lot of my favourite series in particular!
The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it's the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper events of more than a century ago.
Soon “Rippermania” takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was walking with her at the time, didn't notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target? In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities.

This is one of my favourite series, and one of my library finds! I really do need to take another trip there to see what gems I find this time! I've read all three books, eagerly awaiting each new book, and now I'm desperate for book four! I love how Maureen has written this, it's creepy and there's originality and it's just SO good! But like...really creepy! And from this book it just keeps getting better and better!
One night Kylie Galen finds herself at the wrong party, with the wrong people, and it changes her life forever. Her mother ships her off to Shadow Falls—a camp for troubled teens, and within hours of arriving, it becomes painfully clear that her fellow campers aren’t just “troubled.” Here at Shadow Falls, vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, witches and fairies train side by side—learning to harness their powers, control their magic and live in the normal world.
Kylie’s never felt normal, but surely she doesn’t belong here with a bunch of paranormal freaks either. Or does she? They insist Kylie is one of them, and that she was brought here for a reason. As if life wasn’t complicated enough, enter Derek and Lucas. Derek’s a half-fae who’s determined to be her boyfriend, and Lucas is a smokin’ hot werewolf with whom Kylie shares a secret past. Both Derek and Lucas couldn’t be more different, but they both have a powerful hold on her heart.
Even though Kylie feels deeply uncertain about everything, one thing is becoming painfully clear—Shadow Falls is exactly where she belongs…

This is one of my all time favourite series, and honestly, I really feel like it's totally underrated. Like I don't see many people reading it or saying they've read it! This series is SO damn good, I can't even. There's all kinds of supernaturals/paranormals, there's fun and romance and this series is incredibly creepy because GHOSTS! Kylie can see ghosts and they're usually bugging her to solve their murder and it's just so creepy a lot of the time!
3. Shadowland
There's a hot guy in Susannah Simon's bedroom. Too bad he's a ghost.
Suze is a mediator - a liaison between the living and the dead. In other words, she sees dead people. And they won't leave her alone until she helps them resolve their unfinished business with the living. But Jesse, the hot ghost haunting her bedroom, doesn't seem to need her help. Which is a relief, because Suze has just moved to sunny California and plans to start fresh, with trips to the mall instead of the cemetery, and surfing instead of spectral visitations.
But the very first day at her new school, Suze realizes it's not that easy. There's a ghost with revenge on her mind... and Suze happens to be in the way.

Okay so this isn't the same level of creepy as the previous two books, and it's actually the least creepy of all the books on this list, but I had to include it because it's one of my favourite series! I read it when I was in school and it's one of my re-read series! These books are a lot of fun and there's a lot of mystery and ghosts!
Violet Willoughby doesn't believe in ghosts. But they believe in her. After spending years participating in her mother's elaborate ruse as a fraudulent medium, Violet is about as skeptical as they come in all matters supernatural. Now that she is being visited by a very persistent ghost, one who suffered a violent death, Violet can no longer ignore her unique ability. She must figure out what this ghost is trying to communicate, and quickly because the killer is still on the loose.
Afraid of ruining her chance to escape her mother's scheming through an advantageous marriage, Violet must keep her ability secret. The only person who can help her is Colin, a friend she's known since childhood, and whom she has grown to love. He understands the true Violet, but helping her on this path means they might never be together. Can Violet find a way to help this ghost without ruining her own chance at a future free of lies?

I only recently read this, and I actually read it for Spooktober! I read it in one sitting like I seem to find myself doing with all of Alyxandra's books, and I completely loved it! It was creepy, there was a totally cute romance and there was plenty of mystery to be solved! I loved the setting, and it really fit with the story, there's no way it would have worked in a modern setting!
5. Shutter
Micheline Helsing is a tetrachromat—a girl who sees the auras of the undead in a prismatic spectrum. As one of the last descendants of the Van Helsing lineage, she has trained since childhood to destroy monsters both corporeal and spiritual: the corporeal undead go down by the bullet, the spiritual undead by the lens. With an analog SLR camera as her best weapon, Micheline exorcises ghosts by capturing their spiritual energy on film. She's aided by her crew: Oliver, a techno-whiz and the boy who developed her camera's technology; Jude, who can predict death; and Ryder, the boy Micheline has known and loved forever.
When a routine ghost hunt goes awry, Micheline and the boys are infected with a curse known as a soulchain. As the ghostly chains spread through their bodies, Micheline learns that if she doesn't exorcise her entity in seven days or less, she and her friends will die. Now pursued as a renegade agent by her monster-hunting father, Leonard Helsing, she must track and destroy an entity more powerful than anything she's faced before . . . or die trying.

Okay so I put this on the list because I started to read it not long after I got it, but then I got a build up of review books and had to put it on the back burner, which is where it's been ever since. Which is really bad of me but there you go! I'm hoping I'll have time to get to it this week because what I have read was really good, which is why I'm recommending it!
6. Unbreakable

Top Ten Tuesday: 2015 Releases I Meant To Get To But Didn't
Hey guys,
It's time for another Top Ten Tuesday!
So, as we all know, none of us can read every book ever! We all have pretty hefty TBR's and if you don't I'm jealous! Mine is like four freaking shelves, because all the review books get priority! ANYWAY! This should have been hard to do but nope!
1. Crimson Bound by Rosamund Hodge
I actually really wanted to read this, but I never actually got around to actually you know....buying it! I still need to read the other book as well! Hashtag fail.
2. The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows
I was SO excited for this book but again.....never actually got around to buying it even though I told myself I was going to and then read it straight away!
3. Hidden Huntress by Danielle L. Jensen
Completely freaking loved the first book and have no excuse whatsoever for not getting around to the second book! I need to get a shift on because the third book is out this year I think?
4. Royal Wedding by Meg Cabot
Okay so, I would have read this one, but then I wanted to re-read at least the last two Princess Diaries books, but I can't locate them. Before I had my shelves built in the Summer books where scattered everywhere and they've been misplaced SO still not read it.
5. The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh
Everyone raved about this book and I was so desperate to get started on it, but money! Then I got it in Book Depository's Black Friday deals but i'd already decided on my December TBR and just...never got to it! This year though! Especially as the second one is coming out!
6. Soundless by Richelle Mead
I don't know how the frickety frack I never got to this because I freaking love Richelle Mead and this book is full of Chinese mythology and legends and stuff so I don't know what the hell went wrong with this one!
7. Menagerie by Rachel Vincent
Another for the "I don't know how the hell I didn't get to it" pile. Love Rachel Vincent, I've been eagerly awaiting this....but it never happened!
8. Shutter by Courtney Alameda
I actually bought this specifically for Halloween as one of my Halloween reads but everything went wrong with November and I fell so far behind and this kind of just....got forgotten about!
9. Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
Freaking love Rachel Caine, I love the premise for this book it's so interesting and yet....there it sits. On my TBR. Staring at me accusingly.
10. Silver in the Blood by Jessica Day George
This one interested me and I really wanted to get to it and buy it and read it and everything but never quite happened.
So all in all I kinda failed this month, so many books from my fave authors that I never actually read when really....I should have read them straight away!

3. The Power by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.
The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.
Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.
And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

Sequel
ONE SPARK WILL RISE. Nina Kane was born to be an exorcist. And since uncovering the horrifying truth—that the war against demons is far from over—seventeen-year-old Nina and her pregnant younger sister, Mellie, have been on the run, incinerating the remains of the demon horde as they go.
In the badlands, Nina, Mellie, and Finn, the fugitive and rogue exorcist who saved her life, find allies in a group of freedom fighters. They also face a new threat: Pandemonia, a city full of demons. But this fresh new hell is the least of Nina’s worries. The well of souls ran dry more than a century ago, drained by the demons secretly living among humans, and without a donor soul, Mellie’s child will die within hours of its birth.
Nina isn’t about to let that happen . . . even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Sequel
Magic, suspense, and political intrigue collide in this sequel to The Witch Hunter, perfect for fans of Graceling and the Grisha Trilogy.
Former witch hunter Elizabeth Grey is hiding within the magically protected village of Harrow, evading the price put on her head by Lord Blackwell, the usurper king of Anglia. Their last encounter left Blackwell ruined, but his thirst for power grows stronger every day. He's readying for a war against those who would resist his rule--namely Elizabeth and the witches, wizards, pirates, and healers she now calls her friends.
Having lost her stigma, a magical source of protection and healing, Elizabeth's strength is tested both physically and emotionally. War always means sacrifice, and as the lines between good and evil blur once more, Elizabeth must decide just how far she'll go to save those she loves.

12. A Gathering Of Shadows by V. E. Schwab
Release Date: 23rd February
Sequel
Four months have passed since the shadow stone fell into Kell’s possession. Four months since his path crossed with Delilah Bard. Four months since Rhy was wounded and the Dane twins fell, and the stone was cast with Holland’s dying body through the rift, and into Black London.
In many ways, things have almost returned to normal, though Rhy is more sober, and Kell is now plagued by his guilt. Restless, and having given up smuggling, Kell is visited by dreams of ominous magical events, waking only to think of Lila, who disappeared from the docks like she always meant to do. As Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.
But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

Wishing For Wednesday #71
Another Wednesday, another load of fun reads to look forward to!
First up....I can't even. Meg Cabot is releasing a NEW Mediator book. A NEW MEDIATOR BOOK GUYS! It's an adult one and oh my God, I'm so freaking excited I really can't even. The Mediator is probably my favourite Meg Cabot series and I'm so freaking excited and it sounds SO AWESOME! She says as she still needs to read the latest, brand new Princess Diaries...*whistles*
Second is a book that I'm not sure on the title? It says Unhooked everywhere but then it says The Stars Turned Away on a couple of the covers?! EITHER WAY it sounds brilliant, and I know I'll be picturing Colin O'Donoghue as I'm reading. Seriously.
Let me know your picks in the comments!
Remembrance
Suze Simon—all grown up and engaged to her once-ghostly soulmate—faces a vengeful spirit and an old enemy bent on ending Suze's wedded bliss before it begins.
You can take the boy out of the darkness.
But you can’t take the darkness out of the boy.
All Susannah Simon wants is to make a good impression at her first job since graduating from college (and since becoming engaged to Dr. Jesse de Silva).
But when she’s hired as a guidance counselor at her alma mater, she stumbles across a decade-old murder, and soon ancient history isn’t all that’s coming back to haunt her. Old ghosts as well as new ones are coming out of the woodwork, some to test her, some to vex her, and it isn’t only because she’s a mediator, gifted with second sight.
From a sophomore haunted by the murderous specter of a child, to ghosts of a very different kind—including Paul Slater, Suze’s ex, who shows up to make a bargain Suze is certain must have come from the Devil himself—Suze isn’t sure she’ll make it through the semester, let alone to her wedding night.
Suze is used to striking first and asking questions later. But what happens when ghosts from her past—including one she found nearly impossible to resist—strike first?
What happens when old ghosts come back to haunt you?
If you’re a mediator, you might have to kick a little ass.
Remembrance is out February 2nd, pre-order your copy....here!

Unhooked
For as long as she can remember, Gwendolyn Allister has never had a place to call home. Her mother believes they are being hunted by brutal monsters, and those delusions have brought them to London, far from the life Gwen had finally started to build for herself. Gwen’s only saving grace is that her best friend, Olivia, is with her for the summer.
But shortly after their arrival, the girls are kidnapped by shadowy creatures and dragged to a world of flesh-eating sea hags and dangerous Fey. And Gwen begins to realize that maybe her mother isn’t so crazy after all…
Gwen discovers that this new world she inhabits is called Neverland, but it’s nothing like the Neverland you’ve heard about in stories. Here, good and evil lose their meaning and memories slip like water through your fingers. As Gwen struggles to remember where she came from and tries to find a way home, she must choose between trusting the charming fairy-tale hero who says all the right things and the captivating pirate who promises to keep her safe.
Caught in the ultimate battle between good and evil, with time running out and her enemies closing in, Gwen is forced to finally face the truths she’s been hiding from all along. But can she save Neverland without losing herself?

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten Finished Series I have YET To Finish
I really need to start doing this more regularly, the topics are always make me think "OH NO how can I narrow it down!?" or require me to really sit and have a think! This weeks theme is one I really had to kinda narrow down....my TBR is terrible!
So this week is the series that have finished but that you haven't finished reading. My problem is that review books I'm sent take priority over my TBR, and I seem to always be lucky enough to be sent a fair few, which means my own books get bumped lower and lower, which I don't actually mind. I usually have time to read one or two, but I keep buying books even though I know I won't be reading them for a while! I actually have had to separate my TBR into different shelves....next in series, series, first in series, standalone to keep track of what's what! So there's a fair few series I've started but haven't actually gotten around to finishing just yet! And ya know, sometimes I'm just not in the mood to read a book that happens to be like the next in a series. So anyway...here we go.
1. Bloodlines by Richelle Mead
This is one of my favourite series so you'd think I'd have finished it ASAP, but I actually have half the series left. Although from what people where saying after each book came out it's probably a good job I'll end up reading them all one after the other!
2. The Lynburn Legacy by Sarah Rees Brennan
I literally have the final book left, I'm just waiting for a time when I can re-read the others and then read this straight after, because I love this trilogy!
3. Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan
Okay so I've actually only read the first one, the others are sitting on my shelf waiting for the opportune moment to read them. I will get there...eventually!
4. Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter
Literally read these ages ago and the last one has been sitting on my shelf since it came out. I'm aiming to read ones like these, when I've only got one left, next after I'm all sorted with reviews!
5. House of Night by P.C And Kristin Cast
I have two left in this series to read, but I still need to buy the last one. My issue is that they changed the covers halfway through, so I've been buying the US covers so they all match! There's nothing I hate more than covers changing midway through a series!
6. The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
I think the series had the last few books coming out around about GCSE/A Level time so I didn't have much time for regular reading. I have the last three books to read before I'll allow myself to buy Royal Wedding and read it.....but I can't actually locate the last three books in my house!
7. The Lost Boys by Lilian Carmine
I reviewed the first one on NetGalley and then bought an actual copy, and I have bought the other two, I just haven't gotten around to reading them yet!
8. Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini
Again, I read the first one years ago! I have all the others because my nan was reading them as well so we pre-ordered them and everything, but I haven't gotten around to reading them myself yet.
9. Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
I started reading these because my friend had started and was talking about them, I've read the first three, and I have all of the others except for the latest one, but as usual....I'll get there eventually!
10. The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine
Yes, another of my favourite series that I rave about! I have one left! Well two actually, I appear to have missed a book in the middle of the series somehow! So technically two but seeing as I only realised last year, I'm not sure there's much point in me going back to read it!
