Review: The Prophecy

The Prophecy
Rating: 4/5

History is on repeat…

Seth never thought he’d have a future. But now he’s on the brink of having it all with Josie: A tomorrow. A family. A forever. And all that's standing between him and that forever is the Titans. If he helps Josie entomb them -- without killing them, a nearly impossible task for him -- everything he could ever want will be in reach. But he soon realizes that as a god, every little choice he makes can reshape the world for the better… or worse. And in meddling with the Titans, Seth may have just set into motion catastrophic consequences that will force the Olympians to enter the mortal realm and reshape the delicate balance of power that keeps the world from total collapse.

A price must be paid…

Entombing the Titans is Josie’s top priority. After all, it was what she was born to do. But the plans her father put into play to help her are no longer an option, and the odds she and Seth face in forging their own path are grim. The escalating violence between halfs and pures only increases the danger closing in on them and their friends. Josie knows their chances of succeeding in their task are slim at best -- and if they fail, they might lose everything. But she also knows she's not fighting just for herself -- she's fighting for the man she loves, for their future, for the world. Together with the Army of Awesome, Josie and Seth will face the unthinkable. And to win this war, the ultimate sacrifice must be made.

For the end is here and the Prophecy will be fulfilled….

So, I've simultaneously been looking forward to this book and dreading it because you know...it's the last book in the damn series and I knew it was going to hit me in the feels, and I wasn't looking forward to saying goodbye to Alex and Seth and all the other characters....again. But for good this time....I think?

The thing I love about these books are how freaking hilarious they are. I love the humour and I love how snarky Seth is, he and Alex have some brilliant one liners and I find myself chuckling away. I'm always thoroughly entertained when I read one of these books and this one's no different. Thank the Gods for the humour in this book because it offset the heartbreak the book caused me!

My little ship of Cora and Gable started to sail, I loved the two of them, they where so sweet! I just wished we'd gotten to see more of them and their relationship but it was all mostly off screen! Cora made me chuckle at one point though when she was adjusting to her new life! We got one new character in this book, Erik, I felt kinda bad but I really didn't like him. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop with him because he didn't seem trustworthy but he didn't actually do anything and now I ship he and Erin, and I have a burning need to see their relationship so if Jennifer feels like doing a spin off...I'm so ready for it!

Now, I love Jennifer's books, I really do, they're my favourites and they always brighten my mood but I have to say a couple of things that bugged me about the book, and I really hate to do this but I can't gloss over them because she's my favourite author. So, I feel like a few things where a wee bit rushed towards the end, like I said, a couple of the couples where largely off screen and I kept waiting for Erik to do something because he seemed kinda ominous with the whole Ares thing...but nothing came of it. Then they spent all that time collecting the demigods...but they didn't actually do anything either. I'm hoping that maybe in the future there might be something to do with them. Although it was kinda funny watching Alex and co sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing for once!

My other issue is a personal one, and like, it's probably an unpopular opinion but I absolutely hate it when the happy ending involves a baby, like I rolled my eyes so hard when that reveal with Josie happened at the end of the last book and it really disappointed me, and then this book it was all baby this and baby that, and I was a bit like...you know...why does a happy ending have to involve a baby? Like that's not how it is for everyone and it seemed a bit generic and I wasn't really here for it. BUT I guess I do see why it was necessary now considering the reveal at the end!

Anywaaaaaays, I forever love Deacon and Luke, they crack me up. Plus their interactions and banter with Seth, Alex and Aiden...all of their interactions with each other actually, hit me right in the feels and cracked me up and aaaah the feels! Not to mention this book really shows how far Seth has come as a character, and his relationships with both Alex and Aiden have developed more too!

There's plenty of action and plot twists as is to be expected from Jennifer, and I have to say, after some heart wrenching moments that had me second guessing everything...the series wrapped up really nicely! I really liked how everything ended. I'm so sad to leave this world once again though, and let's face it...this is probably the last Covenant series...right? RIGHT?!

Review: If There's No Tomorrow

If There's No Tomorrow

Lena Wise is always looking forward to tomorrow, especially at the start of her senior year. She’s ready to pack in as much friend time as possible, to finish college applications, and to maybe let her childhood best friend Sebastian know how she really feels about him. For Lena, the upcoming year is going to be epic—one of opportunities and chances.

Until one choice, one moment, destroys everything.

Now Lena isn’t looking forward to tomorrow. Not when friend time may never be the same. Not when college applications feel all but impossible. Not when Sebastian might never forgive her for what happened.

For what she let happen.

With the guilt growing each day, Lena knows that her only hope is to move on. But how can she move on when she and her friends’ entire existences have been redefined? How can she move on when tomorrow isn’t even guaranteed?

So, as you guys are probably aware, I'm a huge fan of Jennifer's books! Her contemporary books are ones that I've just started getting in to, and I don't usually like contemporary but Jennifer's books are always well written, intriguing and hit me right in the feels, If There's No Tomorrow is no exception.

The opening is ominous, and I had some idea of what was going to happen from it, but I spent the first part of the book waiting for it to happen and kind of on edge because I wasn't sure who was going to be affected by what would happen or what the exact details where. I did end up being surprised by how it all unfolded!

Lena was such a relatable main character, and she was a book and history nerd too so she was basically me! She and Sebastian where so cute and there was fluff when it came to the romance but there was also angst because it wouldn't be one of Jennifer's books without some angst to go with your fluff!

Lena's journey throughout the book was really emotional for me to read, she struggled to overcome the guilt she was feeling and what happened and it was very realistically written and didn't shy away from the tougher parts.

If There's No Tomorrow has a message to it along with the romance and the fluffier parts, and it's a relatable one too. Most of us have probably been in Lena's situation before she got in to that car. With the decision to make and some of us may have made the wrong one, while others may have made the right one. Her journey throughout the book was tough and it was emotional but seeing her make it in the end, come out the other side...was amazing and inspiring.

Review: The Struggle

The Struggle
Rating: 3/5

A bloody path has been chosen…

The war against the Titans continues, and they remain determined to wreak havoc on the world, but Seth has become something all gods fear. Now the most dangerous, most absolute power no longer resides in those who have been freed from their tombs.

The Great War fought by the few is coming…

All may doubt and fear what Seth has become. All except the one woman who might be his final chance at redemption. Josie will do anything to prove that Seth is on their side, but fate has a nasty way of changing lives, of changing people.

In the end, the sun will fall…

The only way they can save the future and save themselves is by facing the unknown together. It will take more than trust and faith. It will take love and the kind of strength not easily broken. No matter what, their lives will never be the same.

For what the gods have feared has come to pass. The end of the old is here and the beginning of the new has been ushered in…

I'm not going to lie, I still really prefer The Covenant series, and I was expecting this to be the final book because it was supposed to be a trilogy but now there's four books...like I'm excited for another book but at the same time this book made me cringe one or two times.

The Struggle picks up right where we left off and in this instalment we get to learn more about Seth and where he comes from and so on. I've been so intrigued by Seth and where he's from so I got super excited when it was pretty obvious what we where going to learn. I feel like Seth has matured over the course of this series, I've always loved Seth but I love him even more in this series, you can see his changed and grown although he still does have a tendency to do what he wants when it comes to Josie. Like killing Titans when he shouldn't be killing Titans.

As for Josie she bugged me a lot less in this book, like last book she had such a thing about Alex and Alex is my favourite and forever my favourite so I wasn't all that keen on Josie being funny towards her because she was jealous and so on. She seemed to get over that in this book and it was nice to see them becoming friends. Since the last book she hasn't really changed all that much...although we do get to find out which power she inherited from Apollo.

I continue to love our little group. Deacon's sass and pop culture references combined crack me up, like there was a zombie situation and he's like "Free from what? The set of The Walking Dead" and I was like oh Deacon. I continue to love Luke and I feel like we don't get to see enough of he and Deacon, especially as they went on their own mission to kidnap a demi-god! That would have been a fantastic chapter.

Alex and Aiden continue to be cute, I've really missed them and I would kill for a book just about them and how they're doing now and what they get up to and so on. Like I know it won't happen but still. I need it. One thing I liked about this book was the apocalypse happening.....Seth and Aiden...finding...common ground....they where almost like...friends towards the end. Shocking I know.

We didn't really see much of Apollo and I'm not sure I'm liking him much when we do. Hades though...I really love Hades. I'd love to see more of him, I'm not going to lie. He cracks me up, like when Hercules said "He could kill me" and Hades was just like "Oh the tragedy" I was like yes Hades. Saying what we're all thinking. I'm so intrigued by him! Speaking of Hades...we get a little visit from Caleb! Another reason why we should get another Alex and Aiden book...so we can see more of Caleb because I loved his character!

Praise the Lord that 'The Hercules' wasn't in this much...when he first appeared in this book I was like "ffs he's such a prat" but then off he went and we didn't see him again. I can handle that. We do get to see Perses again, like on the one hand he did a good thing...on the other he took his sweet time about it and I still want to throttle him. Such a pillock.

We get some new characters in this book, we briefly get to meet Mitchell, and we get Cora...another demi-god, and I totally ship her and Gable. I was disappointed that with this book we didn't get to see much of Gable after they went through so much to find him last book. He was there for two seconds and then he was gone for the rest of the book...we briefly meet Cora and that's it. I'm slightly worried that with Josie and Seth and all of their drama....they got overlooked in this book and I'm hoping that won't be the case with the next book.

I have to say....there is one scene that was so like the Mummy Returns it's not even. Apollo totally Ardeth'd Seth and was basically like "you've started a chain reaction that could bring about the next Apocalypse" and Seth is all *arms crossed* *eyebrow raised* chill dude.

I'm not really sure what to say about this book, like Jennifer is one of my favourite authors, The Covenant is one of the first YA series I read, it's one of my ultimate favourites and I love all of her books. I'm totally here for Seth's series and getting his happy ending but there where a few niggles with this book that made me feel a bit iffy about it. The Josie and Seth drama that went on a bit too long...like it's going to pop up next book because he hasn't told her something, and I feel like it's eclipsed other things in this book. I just feel like not much happened this book...we got a new demi-god but didn't see much of them...some other things happened and then there was the bombshell at the end that had me like nooooooooooo! So like half of me is excited for the next book but the other doesn't have as much excitement.

Especially with the whole Josie's pregnant thing. Like every book I read recently, the main character ends up pregnant and I'm like....can we not. I really don't like it when a pregnancy is involved and the baby is quite clearly going to be a special snowflake, and it usually ends up making characters change completely. Like I don't know...maybe I have some form of Twilight/Breaking Dawn related PTSD about the whole thing, who knows. I was just so disappointed it took that turn especially as they've been having issues, and they haven't been together that long and then this happens and they're all fine and things are brilliant. I can just clearly see this going the Breaking Dawn way with the pregnancy and everything every time I picture this.

All in all, there where a few disappointing developments, so I'm hoping in the next book that things will happen. More of Cora. More of what she and Gable can do. Consequences for Seth. More Alex and Aiden. More of Deacon and Luke. Apollo needs to stop being so crappy and make up for all his crappiness. I need for Josie to get a bit stronger. Sure she's training and everything but she still seems a bit not very good shall we say. I'd love to be able to ignore the pregnancy aspect but I'm just having huge flashbacks to Twilight whenever I think about it and I'm fairly sure I know how it's going to play out. So yes...disappointing.

Review: Fire In You

Fire In You

Jillian Lima’s whole world was destroyed in a span of a few hours. The same night her childhood love, Brock ‘the Beast’ Mitchell, broke her heart, her life was irrevocably altered by the hand of a stranger with a gun. It takes six years to slowly glue together the shattered pieces of her life, but Jillian is finally ready to stop existing in a past full of pain and regret. She takes a job at her father’s martial arts Academy and she’s going out on her first date since a failed relationship that was more yuck than yum. Jillian is determined to start living.

She just never expected Brock to be a part of her life again. But he’s firmly back in her life before she knows it, and not only is he older, he’s impossibly more handsome, more teasing and more everything. And when he sees Jillian, he’s no longer capable of thinking of her as the little girl who was his shadow growing up or the daughter of the man who gave him a second chance at life. He sees the woman who’d always been there for him, the one person who believed in him no matter what.

Brock knows she’s the one he should’ve made his, and what begins as a tentative friendship quickly turns to red-hot chemistry that sparks a flame that burns brighter than lust. Falling for Brock again risks more than her heart, because when the past sorrow-filled and guilt-ridden past resurfaces, and a web of lies threatens to rip them apart, the fallout could lay waste to everything they’ve fought to build together, and destroy the dreams of those they care most about.

I loooveeee Jennifer! As you all know she's one of my favourite authors, and I've read all of her YA books! Her contemporary adult romance books are a new find for me, and I'm eagerly working my way through all of them! This is my first from this series, and it's made me excited to get to the other books and read the story behind all the other couples! Knowing Jennifer, she's probably linked them all together perfectly, and if I had read the others, I would point out all the little links!

I love friends to lovers stories, and this one was soooo good! I love how it was given some real meat to the story with the events from Jillians past and how she had to move past it and how it effects her still. I love the slow burn romance, I love how Brock wouldn't give up, bless him. I loved how they helped each other overcome things from their past and move past it.

I really loved watching Jillian and Brocks relationship throughout the book, and I was cheering by the end! They where so sweet together. I really related to Jillian, I think we've all had a crush on someone like Brock at some point in life. So it was easy to relate to her emotions about it all. She was such a brilliantly created character, she could have become a bitter person after everything that happened to her but she wasn't and aaahhh I loved her. Then there's Brock. I loved Brock. I was cheering for Brock like "don't let me down dude!"

Fire in You is an at times emotional read, that also has some funny moments, not to mention a brilliant romance that will bring the warm and fuzzies and have you cheering for the couple! I loved the characters and I loved the writing and how a romance was given some emotional punch!

Wishing For Wednesday #106

Yaaaaaayyy, first Wishing For Wednesday of the New Year!
Definitely get excited guys, because there are a tonne of brilliant books coming out this year, and you know, it's only January so all the ones I've found and shared in my blog posts recently are just the start, there's a load more that probably aren't even on GoodReads yet!
To kick off this year's WFW's I've got two of my most anticipated books from a series! One is the third book in a favourite spin off series of mine, and the other is the sequel and final book!
I'm so excited to dive in to both of these and see what happens next!

The Struggle

A bloody path has been chosen…

The war against the Titans continues, and they remain determined to wreak havoc on the world, but Seth has become something all gods fear. Now the most dangerous, most absolute power no longer resides in those who have been freed from their tombs.

Wayfarer

All Etta Spencer wanted was to make her violin debut when she was thrust into a treacherous world where the struggle for power could alter history. After losing the one thing that would have allowed her to protect the Timeline, and the one person worth fighting for, Etta awakens alone in an unknown place and time, exposed to the threat of the two groups who would rather see her dead than succeed. When help arrives, it comes from the last person Etta ever expected—Julian Ironwood, the Grand Master’s heir who has long been presumed dead, and whose dangerous alliance with a man from Etta’s past could put them both at risk.

Meanwhile, Nicholas and Sophia are racing through time in order to locate Etta and the missing astrolabe with Ironwood travelers hot on their trail. They cross paths with a mercenary-for-hire, a cheeky girl named Li Min who quickly develops a flirtation with Sophia. But as the three of them attempt to evade their pursuers, Nicholas soon realizes that one of his companions may have ulterior motives.

As Etta and Nicholas fight to make their way back to one another, from Imperial Russia to the Vatican catacombs, time is rapidly shifting and changing into something unrecognizable… and might just run out on both of them.

Spooktober Recommends: Demons

Time for another recommends post you guys!
Today it's all about demons! There's magic too, but it's mainly demons which is why they're in this category! I've got some other fun rec posts coming your way right up until Halloween, and I've got a rec post for Halloween that, while short, should be good!
There's a mix here, it's all YA, but there's a historical one for you history nerds, some dystopian kinda ones, and then you know...regular modern day ones! Some of my ultimate favourite authors are in this list too, like "auto buy and would love them even if they wrote really bad fan fic not for my ship" kinda favourite.

London, April 1812. Eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall is on the eve of her debut presentation to the Queen. Her life should be about gowns and dancing, and securing a suitable marriage. Instead, when one of her family's housemaids goes missing, Lady Helen is drawn to the shadows of Regency London.

There, she finds William, the Earl of Carlston. He has noticed the disappearance, too, and is one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of powerful demons that has infiltrated every level of society. But Lady Helen’s curiosity is the last thing Carlston wants—especially when he sees the searching intelligence behind her fluttering fan. Should Helen trust a man whose reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her headstrong sense of justice lead them both into a death trap?

This is legitimately one of my favourite books of the year, I loved it! I loved the writing, the language, the plot, the romance and the characters and it hooked me in and kept me reading. I love the twist on demons in this book as well!

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne… it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

I will read ANYTHING that Jennifer writes. ANYTHING. I find it really hard to make decisions and I can't really choose an ultimate favourite author, but Jennifer is tied with a couple of others for that position and I met her at an event in the summer and she was so lovely, it has to be said! I'm gonna ask you all not to judge this by the title/cover. It's a brilliant trilogy, with demons and gargoyles. I loved that because when have you ever read a YA book about gargoyles? I couldn't say that I had before I read this! Jennifer's a great writer, she has brilliant characters, as well as plot and romance and action. Plus there's always plenty of humour!

Sixteen-year-old Nina Kane should be worrying about her immortal soul, but she's too busy trying to actually survive. Her town's population has been decimated by soul-consuming demons, and souls are in short supply. Watching over her younger sister, Mellie, and scraping together food and money are all that matters. The two of them are a family. They gave up on their deadbeat mom a long time ago.

When Nina discovers that Mellie is keeping a secret that threatens their very existence, she'll do anything to protect her. Because in New Temperance, sins are prosecuted as crimes by the brutal Church and its army of black-robed exorcists. And Mellie's sin has put her in serious trouble.

To keep them both alive, Nina will need to trust Finn, a fugitive with deep green eyes who has already saved her life once and who might just be an exorcist. But what kind of exorcist wears a hoodie?

Wanted by the Church and hunted by dark forces, Nina knows she can't survive on her own. She needs Finn and his group of rogue friends just as much as they need her.

Rachel is another of my favourite authors, and this is the first in a duology. It's original, in many aspects, and is a breeze to read through because the book keeps you glued to the page! Demons...exorcists...totally Halloween right?!

Meet Meda. She eats people.

Well, technically, she eats their soul. But she totally promises to only go for people who deserve it. She’s special. It’s not her fault she enjoys it. She can’t help being a bad guy. Besides, what else can she do? Her mother was killed and it’s not like there are any other “soul-eaters” around to show her how to be different. That is, until the three men in suits show up.

They can do what she can do. They’re like her. Meda might finally have a chance to figure out what she is. The problem? They kind of want to kill her. Before they get the chance Meda is rescued by crusaders, members of an elite group dedicated to wiping out Meda’s kind. This is her chance! Play along with the “good guys” and she’ll finally figure out what, exactly, her ‘kind’ is.

Be careful what you wish for. Playing capture the flag with her mortal enemies, babysitting a teenage boy with a hero complex, and trying to keep one step ahead of a too-clever girl are bad enough. But the Hunger is gaining on her.

The more she learns, the worse it gets. And when Meda uncovers a shocking secret about her mother, her past, and her destiny… she may finally give into it.

This is a series I stumbled across on NetGalley when this book was up to review, and I still  haven't read the third book yet because I think they changed publisher, but I'm not sure, I kinda lost track. ANYWAY. This book is a lot of fun, mostly because of Meda and her narrative/inner monologue! It's definitely worth a read, if you fancy reading from the point of view of the "villain".

Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on…

Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary demon trapper Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps.  The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.

But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood.  And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

I can't remember how I came across this series, but I totally read all four in like..four days! Of course, now there's a novella and a fifth book, that I still need to get and read, but still! I loved these. There was a kinda Ghostbusters vibe to the beginning of the first book, there's romance and creepy demons and I love Jana's writing! I had no idea that these books are like basically out of print, but luckily the bind up of the first two is still available!

Nick and his brother Alan are on the run with their mother, who was once the lover of a powerful magician. When she left him, she stole an important charm - and he will stop at nothing to reclaim it. Now Alan has been marked with the sign of death by the magician's demon, and only Nick can save him. But to do so he must face those he has fled from all his life - the magicians - and kill them. So the hunted becomes the hunter...but in saving his brother, Nick discovers something that will unravel his whole past...

Sarah is another of my ultimate favourite authors, and this is the first book of hers that I got to read! I went to the library one weekend, as you do when you want something to read and you're a school student with limited funds, and I picked this up because it sounded intriguing. Next thing I knew, I'd read this and was back at the library to grab the others in the trilogy! I read them SO fast and then grabbed the first Lynburn Legacy book and then had to wait for each new book which was painful but there you go. ANYWAY. Demon's Lexicon is a great read with a great narrative, and it's a great read for all year round, let alone just Halloween! (As are all of these recs to be honest!)

Wishing For Wednesday #76

Hey guys and welcome to another Wishing For Wednesday!
This week I've got two exciting titles by two of my favourite authors!
First up is the second book in a  spin off series by Jennifer Armentrout one of my all time favourite authors, I have every single book she's ever written because she's awesome! I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this book! I'm giving you guys what I think is the US cover, because what I THINK is the UK cover...isn't an actual cover yet! I'm really hoping faces from the past mean two characters whose names begin with A.
Second is a new book, a first in series I believe, from another of my favourite authors! I'm excited to delve in to a new book from her, it's been a while! Although I am behind on her books! It's got Rapunzel vibes, but I've not seen it said anywhere that it is a retelling! It sounds amazing though, not going to lie!

The Power

With any great change, there is always strife, and the Covenant University has become the frontline between pure-bloods who want the Breed Order reinstated and the half-bloods who want the right to control their own destinies.
Fate has other plans.

The violence is escalating and war between the races seems inevitable, and it couldn’t come at a worse time. Hyperion may be out of commission, but Josie and Seth know they have only earned a reprieve. Seth must get Josie fully prepared, which means controlling her newfound abilities, and they need to find the other demigods before the Titans do.
But the gods are sensing a greater threat.

Only one thing is more dangerous than a bunch of starved Titans, and that’s an out-of-control Apollyon. The aether in Josie is drawing Seth in deeper, and when lust mixes with love and gives way to power, he knows being close to her is not only dangerous to her, but to everyone around them, but letting her go requires a level of selflessness that just isn’t Seth’s style.

The paths taken in the past are becoming the roads of the future.

Just as chaos breaks out, familiar faces from the past return, complicating the already strained bond between Josie and Seth, and when the danger from the Titans erupts with devastating consequences, the dark allure of power calls to Seth again, but this time Josie might not be able to pull him back.

And when the struggle between power and love becomes the deadliest battleground, there may be no salvation.

Reign Of Shadows

3. The Power by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Release Date: 25th February
Sequel
