Love is a fire. But who will get burned?
Ember Lord is facing charges for the murder of her father. She was found at the scene of the crime, holding the murder weapon, and refuses to explain herself.
Joe Masters is tasked with getting under Ember's skin, and breaking through her stony facade; to gain her trust and find out what her plans are now her father's legally-questionable business is under her control.
But as the two get closer, Joe begins to break down the wall that Ember has built around herself, and gets a glimpse of the truth behind. Is he really falling for a cold-hearted killer? Or is there more to the murder than meets the eye?
The incredible final instalment of Joss Stirling's Young Detective Agency series, a companion novel to Stung, Shaken, and the award-winning Struck. Romantic thrillers that will make your heart skip a beat.
As you all know, I'm a huge fan of Joss Stirling's books. They pick me up when I'm feeling down, and they give me the warm and fuzzies when I need it, with a nice dose of originality! Her Savants series is my complete favourite and I so wish there where more books in that series, but this series comes in a close second, and I'm so sad to see it finish with this book!
There's intrigue from the start as usual, as Stirling combines mystery, action and romance for one last time....or maybe not. I can hope. Everyone's undercover, so we get to see a lot of Nathan, Kate, Raven and Kieran. Damien and Rose make an appearance but not as much as the others which made me a little sad as this is supposed to be the last book. (I'm so hoping she'll do a series with the branch that Joe's opening in the US. PLEASE JOSS PLEASE!).
I've loved Joe in every single one of the other books and I've been waiting to finally get his story, and the fact he's still dealing with the after effects of something from the first book made this book even better. No detail is unmissed and it made Joe an even more believable character, you could understand his motivations and how he ticked. Ember is the perfect match for Joe, and I really liked seeing the two different sides to Ember. The real her we see from her POV and the fake her that Joe see's in the beginning. I really love how Stirling gives us both POV's, so we see Embers side of things and then Joe's side. We start off with Ember and get to know her, but she still makes you question if she did it...but you could understand why she would. Then we see Joe and you see how Ember appears to the outside world and that makes you wonder too, so you're constantly trying to guess for the first part of the book did she or didn't she? And then you discover what kind of person she really is, and the plot thickens. I love it. Such a brilliant approach.
Ember herself may be prickly on the outside, but you can see throughout the book why she made up her facade, to protect herself and her brother. She's intelligent, she's funny, and she loves her brother so much it was so heartwarming to see, and I loved her brother too!
There are so many brilliant characters in this, like Max, Ember's brother! And Henry, the theatre director. And speaking of, I really loved the way the play, Midsummer Night's Dream, was used in the book and adapted. But I have to say....Raymond may be a tiny character in the grand scheme of the book, but he has one of the best lines and Henry's response to it cracked me up a ridiculous amount. I could picture the scene in my head so clearly, and the way they spoke and the difference so clearly!
Scorched kept me guessing right up until the end, and the surprise reveal that became so obvious in the moment it was revealed! The killer wasn't at all who I thought it was! This is a brilliant final book, wrapping everything up for each of the characters along with Joe and Ember's story. We find out what the others are planning to do and so on. It made me quite sad actually because I'm going to miss the group!
The characters are relatable, and believable and you end up rooting for them in spades, as well as fully understanding them and their actions. It was brilliant to see Joe get his happy ending, he and Ember where so well matched, and get a glimpse of how the story ends for the other couples, although Damien and Rose will forever be my favourite! I'm so, so sad to see this series end, especially as Savants came to an end recently as well, and there was a nice little connection between the two series in this book too!
Scorched is the perfect ending to this series, and is full of everything I loved in the other books. A perfect blend of humour, action, mystery, tension and romance that keeps you guessing throughout!

Review: Summer Shadows
Summer Shadows
Rating: 5/5

Summer lives under a terrible shadow. It drains her, manipulates her and threatens to steal her future.
A high-stakes mission offers a temporary escape. She must use her mind-shadowing abilities to hunt down her target and find the truth.
Hal Robinson is a soldier. He does not get distracted. He wins. But what Hal wants begins to shift once he meets Summer.
They must learn to trust each other if they are going to protect the Savant community. But will their secrets allow them to find a happy ending of their own?
Okay, so on the downside, this is the final Benedict Brothers book which sucks because I'm going to miss the world! On the plus not only is it the perfect ending, but it's the story we've all been waiting for...Victors. Poor old Victor finally gets happy ending you guys and I couldn't help but cheer a little bit! I've been so excited for this book, but also kind of dreading it because you know...final book! I stalked Joss's GoodReads page when I finished and there are no other books, not even for the Struck series :'( ANYWAY...
I felt for Summer, as we've seen her in the other books she's been a fantastic friend and she's also been shrouded in mystery, I wasn't really sure what to expect from Summer and what was going on with her but I was surprised and intrigued by the angle it took. She has an incredibly sucky home life, her father may love her, but he also puts a lot on her and manipulates her. Her mother is an addict of sorts and her brother can't control his gift and it upsets him to the extent he doesn't want Summer near him seeing inside his head. I actually felt sorry for her brother and for the rest of her family as well as for Summer. Summer was a brilliant character, she just does so much for everyone else and wants to help and she was relatable on the book front. She loves to read and I loved all of her references, like Hal says, she's like a walking encyclopaedia and I loved how intelligent she was.
Hal was hilarious, he got Summer's back up straight away and brought out her bratty side. As Summer observes, he's kind of like Marcus and Angel, flaring up with a temper and then shaking it off and putting his point forward calmly, he's like a male version of Angel and he was the perfect match for Summer. She knows all the literary type things, and he knows everything she doesn't like Disney and so on. He was adorable when he was looking after Summer making sure she ate and everything, but he was also kind of a jerk a points. A loveable one but still! To put it in perspective, Summer calls him a rough squaddie, and he calls her Made in Chelsea!
I loved the way the books went, in each book there's something a little different about the romance and the obstacles and I was curious to see what it was in this one. In Summer Shadows we get a Savant who's parentage means that other Savants would treat them differently, not want to be involved with them, maybe not able to have a soulfinder. I was expecting it to be more of an issue than it was, but, then, I couldn't see one of the characters letting it happen! We also have another rare Savant. I thought it was interesting to see the dynamics between the two and how they overcame everything, in Angel Dares there was a pretty big obstacle and Marcus didn't really handle things all that well but in this, Hal knows all about Savants so he wasn't as....freaked as Marcus, shall we say!
Speaking of, I got to see all my faves and I loved seeing Marcus and Angel again! After how they struggled in Angel Dares and how they didn't really fix things until right at the end..I was excited to see them in this book, and see the two of them together, happy and with everything sorted out, and Marcus making use of his Gift and joining in the action!
There's obviously the usual suspects in this, Mist and Alex, Victor obviously because he's finally getting his happy ending and man was it satisfying! Even if we don't see all of the Benedicts, they all are mentioned at one point or other and all help out and it was brilliant! There's also a load of old and familiar faces making an appearance from various other books from the series! All the big guns came out in this one!
We also get a lot of new characters introduced. Last book we had Kurt who I want to get his story! But then I want more Savants in general. So. Yeah. This book we get Hal's brothers, and another Savant family and I'm like...but there's so many more stories to be told! I'm kind of hoping that while the Benedicts series might be over, we get some more Savants books because I seriously love this world, and Joss's writing and the books are ones that I re-read over and over again and they always provide a pick me up! Plus, you can't just introduce us to the Robinsons, Hal and his two brothers, and not give us Lucas and Scott's stories!
Summer Shadows is not only a much awaited story, but it's the perfect ending to the series. Everyone's got their happy endings, we get to see everyone one last time, and a lot of story threads are wrapped up, including one from Stealing Phoenix. It's a very satisfying read! I read this in one sitting, it's not hard to do, I pretty much always read these books in one sitting instead of savouring them like I should, I just have no self control when it comes to these books! Summer Shadows, and all of the books in this series, are easy, fun reads that bring the warm and fuzzies along with the action and adventure and keep you reading in anticipation.

Wishing For Wednesday #92
Happy Wednesday guys!
I've been shockingly bad at keeping up with this because I usually schedule them in advance but I've been so busy and so scatter brained that I've been forgetting to do it each week and haven't had time to do the month in advance! But I'm all back to normal now...hopefully!
First up is the final book (I think) in a trilogy of books that I completely love and while I'm excited for this characters story, I'm also gutted it's over!
Second up is a completely awesome sounding fantasy that I stumbled across on GoodReads, I spend way too much time on there! It's being described as a "swashbuckling adventure with a dark side for fans of George R R Martin and Naomi Novik" which sounds pretty damn awesome, am I right!?
Summer Shadows

In a tall, narrow brownstone, in Brooklyn, New York, there is a girl with a secret. That girl is Rose Knight. She needs to raise millions of dollars to save her father's life. The arrogant and suave Damien Castle is good at uncovering secrets. He's even better at catching criminals. When he meets Rose he knows something is amiss but he can't help but get distracted. It isn't her terrible dress sense that confuses him, or even her obsession with Egyptology. It's the fact that he has never felt this way about a girl before.
But when duty and love are both on the line, which one will Damien choose?
I'm not going to lie to you guys, I'm a huge Joss Stirling fangirl! Ever since I came across Seeking Crystal in the library and ended up buying all three books from the Finding Sky trilogy, I've been hooked! I'm so sad that the savant series is coming to an end after the 6th and final book this year! But it's all good because then we have the Struck series to keep us going! I bought Struck when it first came out, so I actually have the edition that's called Storm and Stone and has a different cover *eye twitch* which definitely does not bother me at all....anyway....so I've been looking forward to finally getting to Damien's story, especially after seeing him in Stung! I even made time to re-read the first two books because why not!
First things first...Joe's back! We haven't seen him since the first book so it was good to get to see him again! He was a brilliant character and I was gutted he wasn't in the second book! Although, the other characters aren't in this book much as it's across the pond from the other two stories! I love how Stirling keeps all the previous characters in, not as much as their own books, but you do get to see them and how they're getting on!
Damien we've already met, and I really liked him except for the whole tackling Kate thing in the cottage, it was at that point when I was like...yep you need to find yourself a lady friend next mate. I've always been curious about Damien because he lives with his completely brilliant Uncle Julian. I seriously love Uncle Julian okay, he's hilarious! Anyway, he lives with him and his parents are off in another part of the world doing their work and Damien is clearly a bit resentful about this and you can't really blame him and so I've been curious to get to know his character better and Stirling goes one step further and lets you see what Damien's family life is like, which was brilliant! I love how things where resolved for him! Having said that, while I was so curious for Damien's story..I still can't believe we haven't had Joe's story!
We have our new character in the form of Rose and I seriously loved her, in fact I think she might be my favourite! How can she not be with the obsession with Egyptology and Ancient History!? She was also delightfully eccentric and intelligent and so determined to do things her way! I mean I get why Joe and Damien did what they did, they where trying to help but I was right there with her being annoyed at them!
Damien and Rose are so perfect for each other, not going to lie! I mean I can't picture Damien with anyone but an Owl, and it makes for some brilliant scenes! I was sad we didn't get a scene with Rose and Kieran meeting properly though! Anyway, Damien gets Rose to have fun, and Rose gets Damien to chill out a bit, and they where so cute and adorable together!
OH and I want to mention a secondary character called Lindy because I completely loved the fact that she wasn't your standard popular girl, meaning she wasn't uber bitchy. She was actually really nice and I love how she was determined to befriend Rose, and was almost like a sister to her, telling others about Rose's achievements proudly and taking her under her wing! It was a nice touch!
Shaken was another brilliant book in a fantastic series! Stirling always delivers for me, we have more brilliant characters, a complex plot with plenty of action and twists to keep you on you guessing that's wrapped up perfectly by the end of the book without feeling rushed! Not to mention an adorable romance that brings the warm and fuzzies to the cold cockles of my heart! Seriously, the ending was so freaking adorable I can't even. I still can't even!
Shaken is romance and thrills with plenty of action to keep you on the edge of your seat, and glued to the book! I love the idea of the YDA, Young Detective Agency, it sounds awesome and I love reading about it and the students and the different groups they occupy, I kind of wish it existed! Brilliantly written, you can easily breeze through it in one sitting like I did! It's one of those books and series that you can re-read whenever you need a mood lift, or just fancy it! The books have plenty of humour to them to have you laughing out loud and looking like a crazy person! I'm not sure how many other books there will be in this series, but I'm really hoping we'll be getting Joe's story next, poor old Joe, he's had a rough time of it! For now I'll be getting pumped for the release of the 6th and final Savant book which is Summer's story! I'm so excited for it!

Angel Dares
Angel Dares
Rating: 5/5
Buy or Borrow: Buy
Source: Copy courtesy of the publisher!
Angel is impulsive. Disguising her savant ability to control water doesn't come easily to her. Then she meets the broodingly handsome Marcus at a music festival where they're both performing, and finds herself all at sea. For when he sings, her soul answers with its own music.
Like the tide, their mutual attraction cannot be held back, but Marcus's mistrust of Angel's gift is even stronger. How can they ever be together if Marcus is unable to accept who Angel is or what they could mean to each other? And with the net closing in on the Savant community it's time for everyone to choose a side.
Right, I'm gonna be straight up with you guys...I freaking love Joss Stirling's books. No matter what mood I'm in, they make me smile, and I enjoy every page. If I'm having a bad day, or a bad time or need a pick me up...her books do it. They make me laugh, they make me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, and they're my go to book whenever I want a comfort read or just want laugh. It just so happens that I got to review this book at the perfect time, and it did pick my mood up immensely! I knew this book would be no different, but I didn't know it would end up being tied for my favourite.
I was really sad that I didn't have time to re-read the other books, because I would have loved to and I feel like I'm due a re-read anyway, but I didn't. With or without re-reading, it was easy to slip back in to the world of the Savants and the familiar characters. This is a series entered on Misty and her friends, Misty being the niece of Crystal from the first trilogy. Because I didn't get to re-read....I may have slightly forgotten some relatives of some characters and therefore gotten slightly confused about how Misty connected to the Benedict Brothers, but then the huge "OOOHH" moment came when I remember and wanted to hit myself for it!
It has to be said, that while there are some Benedict brothers in this book, I'm really sad that the focus has shifted from them and they're not in the books as much. I was hoping the original trilogy would carry on in to a series with the brothers and that this trilogy would be a side trip to explore some of the younger characters. I really miss the Benedict brothers and seeing them so much, and seeing Victor in this book...I can't even. I, and I'm sure many other fans, have a desperate need for Victor and his story! I NEED IT. And after seeing him in this book and the protective side of him I'm just like....GIVE IT TO ME NOW. But anyway. Back on track.
For fans of the series, there's plenty of mentions of other characters, and how others are getting on. Like I said, there are brothers in it. We have Will in this book, finally seeking out his soulfinder and enlisting Angel's help and because nothing ever goes smoothly for our Savants, especially with a dodgy journalist around trying to expose them....a couple of the others pop up to help.
I have a feeling Angel Dares is going to make many a Summer reading list, the setting just vibes with Summer and reading it now in October...I could feel the sunlight and the warmth and long for it! When I was reading I was there, in the Summer sun, at a festival and completely lost in the book. I completely loved the setting. The whole "band romance" storyline is one that I can get on board with, as you don't really see it a lot and it was an interesting direction to take considering Savants try to keep quiet and off the radar. Seeing as how I've spent a lot of time at music festivals, the setting was very evocative for me, and I could relate to lots of things and I would remember lots of my own memories!
I've got to say, I loved Angel immediately. I loved her personality, and her ability to attract trouble like a magnet. I loved her positivity and her determination, and I kind of wanted to punch Marucs towards the end of the book, on her behalf! Angel, to me, wasn't the typical damsel in distress. Yes she had to be rescued, she didn't have any other options, but she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself as she demonstrated more than once. Her mistakes where ones that you could forgive her for because they where mistakes most people make...without the Savant complications! She wasn't a perfect character and that made her so real and likeable, it was off the charts!
Marcus. Well....I can't lie. He was a complete douche in the beginning and that's being polite! I spent a lot of the book kind of rooting for him and Angel, but then wanting to smack him one and kind of disliking him. But then he'd do something sweet and I like him.....for him to then be a douche again. Events at the end of the book really made me angry at him though...not going to lie! Like he did do the right thing, but he didn't really want to and he didn't believe Angel or believe in her. Sometimes it was understandable but other times you where just like...damn...Angel got the short straw! He really was a reluctant hero, and mucked up at every given opportunity so he wasn't your average romantic hero!
Marcus and Angel where kind of the perfect contrast. He's so serious and takes himself so seriously, whereas Angel is completely happy and positive all the time and just wants to have fun and make the most of every opportunity.
The thing with the romance was, that while Angel liked him and wanted him and everything...she didn't put up with his crap and how he was treating her, and she actually did hate him at some points, much like I did! Throughout the book, you where wondering if this was going to be one of those times soulfinders didn't actually work out, and you weren't sure how they could get together and have their happily ever after and everything so you never knew where it was going or what was going to happen next. Angel was incredibly strong about the whole Marcus douche thing as well, which made me kind of sad when she did forgive him, because while it was completely cute and literally had me flailing with the cute....I really did feel like she forgave him far too easily and wished the book had a few more pages so it wasn't quite so rushed. But still.
The romance, when Marcus wasn't being a douche, was actually really cute and gave you a definite case of the warm and fuzzies. Seriously. It's one of the things I love about Stirling's books...the romance is always well written, never easy, and always makes you go all "aaawwww squeeeeeee" with the romance.
I was so sad we didn't get more of Will, he's in the book because we're actually looking for his soulfinder and he does....ya know...find her...but I wanted to bask in Will finally finding her, but he and his SF where more like supporting characters and we didn't see more of their romance and I was like "I NEED MORE!". Like I said, I'm totally sad the books are veering from the Benedicts because I loved them as characters and I wanted to see more of them and their HEA's! Victor in this though....I LOVE HIM.
I loved the vibe of the book, it was funny, like there where so many funny scenes that had me cracking up or smiling or just chuckling. The setting was fun and vibrant. The characters where fantastic. We get more of Misty and Alex as well as Summer, and I love how Stirling gives you all these characters, and while I might want to see more of the Benedicts and everything, each character, no matter how much they're in the book, is well developed and you learn a decent amount about them to understand them.
The setting and the events and reactions and so on, where all very authentic. Especially Angel's meeting with the lead singer of Gifted....I think we've all been there with the whole *heavy breathing* "I'M NEVER WASHING THIS HAND AGAIN" *fangirls*. As well as other things. I just loved how I was reading, and thinking "so true" to a lot of the things happening.
I found the book to be fairly unpredictable, there where some bits that I guessed, like the end...but it didn't diminish it because I was just getting more and more excited to get to it and the unending cuteness! I wasn't expecting the majority of turns, I was even wrong about which band Marcus belonged to! There where a couple of things that I guessed...but got completely wrong and I loved not knowing how it was all going to end and what was going to happen next.
What I really loved, after seeing so many Savants who know what they are and have known about their gift all their lives and how to use it, was seeing so many Savants with no idea what they where. It was interesting to watch Angel handle the whole thing and how to explain and make them believe her, and see how the characters dealt with it and came to terms with it.
This book is literally full of feels and there's loads of drama that has you on the edge of your seat, or biting your nails or wanting to punch other characters. You're groaning and going "noooooo" at some events and cheering at others and it's a complete rollercoaster with plenty of cute moments. I was glued to the page and read it in one sitting, I don't think I've ever not read one of Stirling's books in one go...it's a real problem. I'm like a binge reader of her books. I have no self control. I kinda wanted the book to last longer!
Like I mentioned, Crystals has always been my favourite story because I related to her so much and loved her completely...but after reading this book and it having a (I want to say trope but I'm not sure it's the right word) storyline that I kinda, sorta love, and loving Angel so much....I think Crystal and Angel are kind of tied for favourite story and character!
I really can't wait for Summer's story to see Angel and Marcus again, because I so want to see them being all cute and FINALLY together, with him all accepting of everything! I also want to know more about the mysterious Summer and see who her SF is...I'm kinda hoping for Victor but he's way too old sadly. I'm assuming/hoping that we get Victors HEA in Summer's story and I'm hoping we get to see loads of Victor and his SF as well as Summer's because I've waited SO LONG for Victors!

Wishing For Wednesday #56
Get excited for this WFW!
First up is the next book in a series that I've been reading for a while, I shouldn't really call it my guilty pleasure series, but it kinda is. Either way it's an awesome series and I'm seriously excited for it!
Next up is one of the most awaited books for any Game Of Thrones fan, maybe it'll tide you over until the next book, but then again...maybe not.
Angel Dares
Angel is impulsive. Disguising her savant ability to control water doesn't come easily to her. Then she meets the broodingly handsome Marcus at a music festival where they're both performing, and finds herself all at sea. For when he sings, her soul answers with its own music. Like the tide, their mutual attraction cannot be held back, but Marcus's mistrust of Angel's gift is even stronger. How can they ever be together if Marcus is unable to accept who Angel is or what they could mean to each other? And with the net closing in on the Savant community it's time for everyone to choose a side.
Angel Dares is out October 1st, pre-order your copy....here!

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms
Taking place nearly a century before the events of A Game of Thrones, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms compiles the first three official prequel novellas to George R. R. Martin’s ongoing masterwork, A Song of Ice and Fire. These never-before-collected adventures recount an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living consciousness.
Before Tyrion Lannister and Podrick Payne, there was Dunk and Egg. A young, naïve but ultimately courageous hedge knight, Ser Duncan the Tall towers above his rivals—in stature if not experience. Tagging along is his diminutive squire, a boy called Egg—whose true name (hidden from all he and Dunk encounter) is Aegon Targaryen. Though more improbable heroes may not be found in all of Westeros, great destinies lay ahead for these two . . . as do powerful foes, royal intrigue, and outrageous exploits.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam-and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart-she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League.
