A powerful tale of magic, love and revenge set in a fairy tale Japan. Suzume is a shadow weaver. Her illusions allow her to be anyone she wants - a fabulous gift for a girl desperate to escape her past. But who is she really? A heartbroken girl of noble birth? A drudge scraping by in a great house's kitchens? Or Yue, the most beautiful courtesan in the Moonlit Lands? Whatever her true identity, she is determined to capture the heart of a prince - and use his power to destroy those who murdered her family. Nothing will stop her. Not even love.
So unlike everyone else, I read Barefoot on the Wind before I read this, and I know a lot of other reviewers where making comparisons between the two but for me, I was doing it the other way around! This was obviously a lot longer than BOTW, but I loved the fairy tale like quality to Marriott's storytelling, and I think I might actually like this one more than BOTW!
I love how this leans slightly towards the dark, and I loved the message of the book. Suzume is so determined in her revenge, and I loved how that was resolved and like I said..the message behind it! I felt like the book was very atmospheric and cinematic, the beginning drew me in. Sure it's based on Cinderella but it's kinda like a twisted Cinderella. Things have been changed and switched about in a really interesting way and the author has put her on unique stamp on it, so it's loosely based on Cinderella. I liked how the author dealt with self harm throughout the course of the book, I liked how complex the characters where, things weren't straight forward with the characters. There was action and romance, and overall this was such a brilliant read. It was easy to slip in to the world of the book, the same world that BOTW is set in, and it was easy to breeze through this in one sitting.
I am going to say that I was straight up suspicious of Terayama from the beginning, and I knew exactly what he was up to and what he'd done. I had his measure from the beginning! I would love to say I was surprised about Suzume's mother's behaviour, especially at the end, but sadly I saw that coming too. I really felt for Suzume throughout the course of the book, she didn't have a great time, but she kept on going. Kept fighting, sure she was driven by revenge, but I had to admire her determination. I understood her need for vengeance. I felt for her, and I loved how you saw many different sides to her throughout the course of the book.
Otieno I also really loved, he didn't give up on Suzume he was there for her and he was really sweet and adorable at times. I was rooting for him from the beginning and I shipped he and Suzume so hard! I also really liked some of the secondary characters, especially Akira, she wasn't what I was expecting and I loved her relationship with Suzume and how she helps her, and I loved the little story at the back of the book about her!
Shadows on the Moon, is a brilliant, quick and imaginative read. Marriott creates such an evocative and vivid world that you can fall in to it and lose track of everything while you're reading. The characters are memorable and complex, you can root for them, you can understand their actions even if you don't agree with them. I loved the romance, it was so cute and it hits you in the feels, and I could read so many books set in this world!

Review: Barefoot On The Wind
Barefoot On The Wind
Rating: 4/5

A companion title to Zoë Marriott's critically acclaimed Shadows on the Moon, BAREFOOT ON THE WIND is a darkly magical retelling of "Beauty and the Beast" set in fairytale Japan.
There is a monster in the forest...
Everyone in Hana's remote village on the mountain knows that straying too far into the woods is a death sentence. When Hana's father goes missing, she is the only one who dares try to save him. Taking up her hunting gear, she goes in search of the beast, determined to kill it - or be killed herself.
But the forest contains more secrets, more magic and more darkness than Hana could ever have imagined. And the beast is not at all what she expects...
I love a good fairytale retelling, and I love Japan and it's mythology and I've read Marriott's The Name of the Blade trilogy...or well the first two books so far anyway, and loved it! SO, seeing as how much I love Beauty and the Beast...I couldn't resist reviewing this! Also the cover is totally gorgeous!
Barefoot on the Wind totally has a feminist twist that I think a lot of you guys are going to love, and the writing is gorgeous, as is the setting! I love how Marriott kept a distinct fairytale feel to the story, as well as giving you a magical atmosphere to the maze. I loved Marriott's world building, the way she created the village and the way you could feel the isolation of the place, and then the sinister woods and the magical and slightly creepy maze. I also really liked the romance and how it blossomed over the course of the story, and I really liked the ending of the book! I kinda want more!
I fell in to the world completely, I loved Hana, and I loved the journey she went on within the book both with the whole "taking down the Beast" thing and then personally as well. I rooted for her and I loved that she went of her own accord to fight the Beast. I felt for her, there was a lot of emotion in the book both with Hana and with the other characters, and it really seeps out of the book. I was cheering Hana on when she was shouting down the village and then battling the baddie. Although I did actually really feel for the "bad guy" like sure...she went all evil and vengeancey but at the same time, I could see where she was coming from.
Barefoot On The Wind is a magical read, full of emotion and atmosphere, with vivid writing and memorable characters, that all combine to suck you in to the world of the book. It's a brilliant original retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and one of my favourites!

Wishing For Wednesday #14
This week I am super excited for three little gems!
One of these is one that I stumbled across when browsing GoodReads, something I usually do when I'm watching TV and I need something to do, I can never just sit and watch TV, I have to be doing something or eating something, and to be honest, I always end up with like a weeks worth of Hollyoaks to catch up on so yeah....browsing happens a lot! Which doesn't really help my TBR list!
Now, I'm sure Bane Chronicles needs no explanation, you all know by now I'm a huge Mortal Instruments fan.....right? ;)
The Name Of The Blade
Ancient Japanese gods and monsters are unleashed on modern-day London in this first book of an epic trilogy from acclaimed fantasy writer Zoë Marriott.
When Mio sneaks the family's katana -- a priceless ancestral sword -- from her parents' attic, she just wants to spice up a costume. But the katana is much more than a dusty antique. Awakening the power within the sword unleashes a terrible, ancient evil onto the streets of unsuspecting London. But it also releases Shinobu, a fearless warrior boy, from the depths of time. He helps to protect Mio -- and steals her heart. With creatures straight out of Japanese myths stalking her and her friends, Mio realizes that if she cannot keep the sword safe and learn to control its legendary powers, she will lose not only her own life . . . but the love of a lifetime.
