Confronted with yet another challenge to prove she is worthy to become queen, Sariphi must now entertain the mysterious Duke Galois upon his visit to the palace. But will learning niceties and dance steps be enough to win over the duke, who is rumored to be a fearsome warrior with a burning hatred for all things human? Or has Sariphi been set up to fail her w ay out of the palace and the beast realm for good?
Sariphi is dwelling on the hatred between humans and beast kind after the events of the previous volume, meanwhile Anubis pretty much fully hates her now and decides to step up his campaign to stop her becoming Queen and get rid of her.
Her next trial is to host a guest at the palace who's coming to see her as they couldn't make it to her previous get together. Said guest is Duke Galois who hates humans. I can't say I was all that surprised by this development, but I was curious as to how it would play out.
Sariphi has her work cut out for her, she has to get ready for it all, and we get to meet with a couple of new characters in this volume, obviously. Galois and Joz. We do have a couple of tense moments, but ultimately Sariphi pulls through and the twist wasn't all that much of a surprise as I'd been on to it from close to the start. She once again proves herself worthy with some flowery words and lives to annoy Anubis another day.
I'm beginning to find this series a little bit repetitive and Sariphi seems to have no problems overcoming each thing that's thrown her way.

Hoping to take vengeance for the murder of his childhood friend Sariphi, the young Ilya infiltrates the royal palace. He's captured, and the King shows him mercy, sparing his life. When Ilya learns that Sariphi herself is still very much alive, he demands her return. Sariphi refuses, only to be kidnapped by Ilya, who intends to bring her back to human territory. The King is then confronted with a dilemma: If he truly wishes for Sariphi's happiness, is it kinder to pursue her...or to let her be returned to her own people?
So, for all Sariphi's talk about how she never had any friends because she was raised to be a sacrifice...it turns out that she did have one friend that she forgot to mention...Ilya. He's come to retrieve her or ya know, avenge her if she's already did and thus we have....the love triangle.
Poor old Leonhart has a bit of a crisis of confidence, bless him, wondering if Sariphi is perhaps better off in the human realm with Ilya and I feel like this little incident has served to show how far their relationship has come and the bond and feelings between them. It's cemented the fact that Sariphi is here to stay before we start, presumably, the next round of the trials.
Meanwhile Ilya is angry basically all the time, you can't really blame him when you consider his past and thanks to him we get to learn more about Sariphi and how she grew up. I did think this love triangle they threw in was going to last longer than just this one volume...but there's no telling if Ilya will pop up again. However it does seem like they laid it to rest. It provides a nice diversion from the trials and like I said....reaffirms everything before we continue onwards.

When an array of rival princesses descends upon the palace, Sariphi gains an unlikely ally in the princess of the reptile clan. A hopeless romantic, Princess Amit is determined to push her erstwhile sacrifice friend into the king's arms! But even with Amit cheering her on, will Sariphi be able to carry out the absurd set of tasks Chancellor Anubis concocts to prove she is worthy of being queen...?
This volume we have all the Princesses present and vying for the King's attention. Princess Amit is literally the only likeable one. Seriously. Bless her, she soon becomes fast friends with Sariphi which was nice to see because Sariphi kind of doesn't have any friends. It's good that she has someone in her corner, to talk things through with. Because of Amit, Sariphi makes a few breakthroughs with her feelings this volume too.
Aside from Amit, we also meet a new member of the King's court, Jormungand who's the Captain of the Royal Guard. I ship he and Amit so much, I'm not going to lie. They're so cute together! As for Vivian..she's back and she's still up to her shady tricks. She's even nastier than before actually, but praise the Lord she finally gets hers!
Anubis....I'm so concerned about him. He is most definitely up to something to keep his position secure along with the Council, and of course he wants to secure the Kings position too. Anubis and the Council decide to make things difficult for Sariphi, they basically say they'll only accept her as the Queen Consort if she meets their conditions. Their conditions are impossible and more than a little bit unfair. I feel like Anubis is treading on some very thin ice with the King because the King knows the conditions are all Anubis' idea and he just keeps pushing it.
I get Anubis wanting to secure his position, but I'm really not liking him anymore. I kind of want to smack him one. I think he's up to more than just these conditions/trials and he allegedly does everything to protect the King...but does he really? He just gets shadier with each volume.
Luckily Sariphi has a Holy Beast to help her out...unfortunately Bennu is a foul mouthed, basically grumpy old man in baby Phoenix form. He's an entertaining addition but I'm not sure how much help he'll be or if he's just another cute sidekick.
The volume is well paced, and Sariphi is coming more in to her own. She's pretty determined to succeed and she starts to believe in herself and what she wants more in this volume, and gets the King to believe in her too. I feel like her character has made some progress in the right direction. The Trials are far from over though, and there's clearly a lot more in store.

Review: Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts

A young girl has resigned herself to being he next sacrificial meal for the Beast King...but the king is no mere monster! Love is more than skin-deep in this gorgeous fantasy manga.
I'm not going to lie to you guys, I got some hardcore Beauty and the Beast vibes from this one! I feel like Yen Press has really got my back with all these fairy tale retellings...Mermaid Boys and the Little Mermaid, this and Beauty and the Beast....I'm living for it!
I eagerly dove in to this ready to see what it was all about, and right from the start I was hooked. Why? Because there's a certain character and I was like "Wooooaaaaah he looks like Anubis...oh wait...he actually is...HELL YES I'M GONNA LOVE THIS". Anubis is kind of a nag, but he's also really funny although I kinda wanted to smack him at one point.
Sariphi has such an attitude and it's freaking hilarious, she had me chuckling from the start and you can't help but empathise and root for her. Her sole purpose was to be "sacrificed" to the King of Beasts. But she's not actually bitter or anything like you'd expect.
The King is the definition of the tortured hero, he's trying to protect everyone and everything and harming himself in the process but no-one's aware of it. Except for Sariphi towards the end, but still. His human form is gorgeously drawn, and his beast form is reaaaaally reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast, but fiercer!
Oh and Cy and Clops are totally adorable!
The story moves along at a nice, fast pace! Introducing us to the characters and kicking the plot off. There's political intrigue and unrest to go with the humour and romance, and there's even some drama thrown in too! The art is gorgeous, and cute, I loved how the beast people are drawn! I also particularly liked the world, it's a fun world, and we get quite a lot of information about it and how it all works, it's really intriguing!
The ending certainly leaves you wanting more and I'm definitely curious to see how this is all going to play out and where the story is going to go! Oh, and there's a brilliant bonus chapter too!
