In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch...until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she's never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody "knows" might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem...
Witch Hat Atelier has some seriously gorgeous colour pages to start off the volume, and the magic system is interesting with the fact that it's all about drawing the spells rather than just speaking the words. Things do kick off quite quickly, of course little idiot Coco does the thing she shouldn't do and there are Consequences. Said consequences see her heading out with Qifrey, a witch, in order to track down another copy of a certain book that they need to fix the mistake that she made. And so the adventure begins!
I don't really have much to say about this particular volume, other than I don't think it's my cup of tea. After the initial start, I do feel like things got a little slow and I just didn't get all that attached to Coco or find myself fully invested. My attention kept wandering after my initial interest wore off and Coco kinda frustrated me with how she just kept running off and doing things without thinking like she did..the first time...causing her problem...you'd think she'd learn!?
Witch Hat Atelier is cute, it's got some gorgeous art, and some interesting points but it's just not my thing.
