Halloween Reads 2017

Hey guys!
It's finally time for my Halloween book recommendations! So I've done a couple of Halloween book rec posts over the course of my blogging life, so rather than go through the same books again, I'm going to show you guys some new ones! I'll link you to my previous Halloween book rec posts....here

Most of these books are new books out this year, and a couple that I've read recently that are older books! I haven't featured any of this before though!

Stalking Jack the Ripper & Hunting Prince Dracula

Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord's daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.

Against her stern father's wishes and society's expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle's laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.

Bone white. Blood red. Along this path, you’ll soon be dead.

Following the horrifying revelation of Jack the Ripper’s true identity, Audrey Rose Wadsworth flees her home in Victorian London to enroll as the only female student in Europe’s most prestigious forensics school. But it’s impossible to find peace in the dark, unsettling Romanian castle that houses the school—and was also once home to the depraved Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Prince Dracula.

When a series of troubling deaths brings whispers of Vlad’s bloodthirsty return from the grave, Audrey Rose and her sharp-witted companion, Thomas Cresswell, must unravel the cryptic clues that will lead them to the shadowlike killer—living or dead.

Okaaaay, so if you know me and follow me on any social media, this first entry is probably not a surprise. I completely and utterly loved Stalking Jack the Ripper, it was gripping and richly written and super freaking creepy! The sequel Hunting Prince Dracula, has been one of my most anticipated reads of this year since...well..last year! I'm so psyched to read it, and I'm going to be re-reading Stalking Jack the Ripper this month, before I fiiinaaallllyyy get stuck in to the sequel!
Genuinely, they're perfect Halloween reads, and I'm expecting Hunting Prince Dracula to be just as creepy as it's predecessor. They'll pull you in with the rich storytelling and you might want to read in daylight!

The Dark Days Club

London, April 1812. Eighteen-year-old Lady Helen Wrexhall is on the eve of her debut presentation to the Queen. Her life should be about gowns and dancing, and securing a suitable marriage. Instead, when one of her family's housemaids goes missing, Lady Helen is drawn to the shadows of Regency London.

There, she finds William, the Earl of Carlston. He has noticed the disappearance, too, and is one of the few who can stop the perpetrators: a cabal of powerful demons that has infiltrated every level of society. But Lady Helen’s curiosity is the last thing Carlston wants—especially when he sees the searching intelligence behind her fluttering fan. Should Helen trust a man whose reputation is almost as black as his lingering eyes? And will her headstrong sense of justice lead them both into a death trap?

Along with the previous books on this list, this is the other book that I'll recommend until I'm blue in the face and beg people to read! I'm gonna be re-reading this, before finally getting stuck in to the sequel The Dark Days Pact! If you like your historical fiction, richly written and engrossing...with a hint of the supernatural then this is for you! The demons are interesting as is how they function and the supernatural elements in general. There's action, intrigue and romance....and of course there's some dark and creepy bits! Not as creepy as the above and below entries but still a wee bit creepy.

Before The Devil Breaks You

New York City.
1927.
Lights are bright.
Jazz is king.
Parties are wild.
And the dead are coming...

After battling a supernatural sleeping sickness that early claimed two of their own, the Diviners have had enough of lies. They're more determined than ever to uncover the mystery behind their extraordinary powers, even as they face off against an all-new terror. Out on Ward's Island, far from the city's bustle, sits a mental hospital haunted by the lost souls of people long forgotten--ghosts who have unusual and dangerous ties to the man in the stovepipe hat, also known as the King of Crows.

With terrible accounts of murder and possession flooding in from all over, and New York City on the verge of panic, the Diviners must band together and brave the sinister ghosts invading the asylum, a fight that will bring them fact-to-face with the King of Crows. But as the explosive secrets of the past come to light, loyalties and friendships will be tested, love will hang in the balance, and the Diviners will question all that they've ever known. All the while, malevolent forces gather from every corner in a battle for the very soul of a nation--a fight that could claim the Diviners themselves.

It's finally here! The Diviners book three is actually out in the world and it's just in time for Halloween! I will forever recommend the Diviners series for Halloween because the first book is super freaking creepy and murdery, and the sequel, Lair of Dreams is creepy in a psychological way. I'm intrigued to see what level of creepy this instalment is, and to see what's happening with my ship! Like the previous entries...this one's historical and it's super authentic and vivid...also like the previous entries on this list. Incredibly well written and intriguing it keeps you reading, and it will totally creep you out! Like Diviners is the creepiest so far, the second one will make you not want to sleep at all but for different reasons and well..we'll see how this one goes! I have a feeling this one's going to be a combination of murder creepy and psychological creepy. There's mystery, murder, blood, creepiness, memorable characters and there's some romance to add some lightness to this series! I'm having a giant series re-read this month and I'm so excited..and slightly terrified!

Spellslinger

Magic is a con game.

Kellen is moments away from facing his first mage's duel and the start of four trials that will make him a spellcaster. There's just one problem: his magic is gone. As his sixteenth birthday approaches, Kellen falls back on his cunning in a bid to avoid total disgrace. But when a daring stranger arrives in town, she challenges Kellen to take a different path. Ferius Parfax is one of the mysterious Argosi - a traveller who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She's difficult and unpredictable, but she may be Kellen's only hope...

Spellslinger and it's sequel Shadowblack are on my Halloween TBR too, and they should be on yours!  What's Halloween without some magic? It's also the second entry on this list that isn't creepy! Featuring some brilliant magic and world building, it's a humorous and engaging read perfect for Halloween if you don't like being creeped out! I really do love how magic works in this series!

Jackaby

Newly arrived in New Fiddleham, New England, 1892, and in need of a job, Abigail Rook meets R. F. Jackaby, an investigator of the unexplained with a keen eye for the extraordinary--including the ability to see supernatural beings. Abigail has a gift for noticing ordinary but important details, which makes her perfect for the position of Jackaby’s assistant. On her first day, Abigail finds herself in the midst of a thrilling case: A serial killer is on the loose. The police are convinced it’s an ordinary villain, but Jackaby is certain it’s a nonhuman creature, whose existence the police--with the exception of a handsome young detective named Charlie Cane--deny.

Okay, so this makes the list again because the fourth and final book in the series, The Dire King is out just in time for Halloween, providing the perfect opportunity for a Halloween binge read! This series is truly brilliant and if you're a fan of Sherlock you need to read it! It's like a supernatural version of Sherlock and it really hooks you in! It's also only mildly creepy, if at all so it's one of the lighter entries on the list! I'm gonna be reading the final book this October, but you guys should get binge reading if you haven't already!

Lockwood and Co

When the dead come back to haunt the living, Lockwood & Co. step in . . .

For more than fifty years, the country has been affected by a horrifying epidemic of ghosts. A number of Psychic Investigations Agencies have sprung up to destroy the dangerous apparitions.

Lucy Carlyle, a talented young agent, arrives in London hoping for a notable career. Instead she finds herself joining the smallest most ramshackle agency in the city, run by the charismatic Anthony Lockwood. When one of their cases goes horribly wrong, Lockwood & Co. have one last chance of redemption. Unfortunately this involves spending the night in one of the most haunted houses in England, and trying to escape alive.

Okay so I've been seeing people raving about these books and I've been eyeing them up for ages, so this Halloween with the release of the fifth and final book, The Empty Grave...I decided it was binge reading time. I'm hearing they're chilling, spooky and brilliantly written so I'm excited to get stuck in! I can't give you guys an accurate reading on the creepy meter though, sorry!

The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding

Prosper is the only unexceptional Redding in his old and storied family history — that is, until he discovers the demon living inside him. Turns out Prosper's great-great-great-great-great-something grandfather made — and then broke — a contract with a malefactor, a demon who exchanges fortune for eternal servitude. And, weirdly enough, four-thousand-year-old Alastor isn't exactly the forgiving type.

The fiend has reawakened with one purpose — to destroy the family whose success he ensured and who then betrayed him. With only days to break the curse and banish Alastor back to the demon realm, Prosper is playing unwilling host to the fiend, who delights in tormenting him with nasty insults and constant attempts trick him into a contract. Yeah, Prosper will take his future without a side of eternal servitude, thanks.

Little does Prosper know, the malefactor's control over his body grows stronger with each passing night, and there's a lot Alastor isn't telling his dim-witted (but admittedly strong-willed) human host.

New out this year, it's an immediate add to the Halloween/October TBR! I love Alexandra's books, and I've never been let down by one yet! So I'm anticipating this being a truly brilliant Halloween read. Original, with fantastic storytelling and quite likely a hint of creepiness!

The Mortician's Daughter: One Foot in the Grave

Her dad’s an alcoholic. Her mom passed away when she was young. She sees dead people. Can seventeen-year-old Riley Smith’s life get any crazier? Yes it can.

When Riley’s attempt to help a spirit leads her to the discovery that the young woman’s death wasn’t an accident, she finds herself face-to-face with the killer. And just when things seem like they couldn’t get any more complicated, she’s visited by another ghost, a boy her age, whose smile makes her melt. Her job is to convince him to pass over, but her heart doesn’t want to let him go.

I looooveeee Hunter's books, I feature her Shadow Falls series on my October recommendations posts all the time! They're filled with the supernatural, mystery, action and romance, and the main Shadow Falls series is super freaking creepy! Della's spin off is less creepy but still just as supernatural and awesome! I've been itching for a new book from Hunter for ages, and lo and behold, look what's out in time for Halloween! I'm sure this is going to have Hunter's usually original twists, and be an engrossing and creepy read!
